“No one will remember me.”

These were the last words my mother said to me. In the close to two years since her death, I have remembered my mother daily. In the process of working through those memories, I began to write letters to her. I needed to ask her questions. I needed to see the details of who she was. I have discovered that the person I remember was both the woman for whom simple things, like one bright silver Hersey’s kiss, brought pleasure and the woman who wanted china, silver, crystal, and linen on her table, jewels on her fingers, and furs on her back. She could be like humans everywhere and want to be remembered in the sense that she had once existed, and she could be like her own singular self and want all that was her to last. My mother never really knew who she was, not even understanding that her life-long best friend was also her second cousin, but at the end she wanted to be her own true self, but did not know who that was. I intend to remember her, but I have to find her in order to do that the way she wanted. My letters to her are a journey of discovery, which she and I are taking together.
